Gaiman versus Whedon?

According to JoBlo.com, Neil Gaiman's "Mirrormask" is coming out on September 30, the same day as "Serenity". In my estimation this would not be good for either film since Whedon fans and Gaiman fans tend to overlap a lot. If people are forced to choose, that could drive down those crucial opening weekend receipts for both films.

I do believe that Mirrormask, unlike Serenity, will only be getting a NY/LA release on that date. So, for all intents and purposes, there probably won't be much competition.

Of course, if you believe those rumors about Serenity's release date possibly being pushed up, it might not be an issue at all.

I saw those rumors on Whedonesque after I'd already posted. They are just rumors right now, but promising ones, I suppose.

Oh that would suck, but I think the audience for Serenity is much bigger.

I would probably go see Serenity on Friday, go see Mirrormask on Saturday, and then go back to see Serenity again on Sunday.

I guess the audiences aren't strictly overlapping, anyway -- after all, "Mirrormask" isn't quite cut out of the same cloth as some of Gaiman's other work, it's targeted at a slightly younger audience, I think.

I got the impression that Mirrormask was also going to be something of an "art" film? Am I wrong -- is it going to get a wide release?

Other people are telling me it is only getting a limited release, so I guess it's true, yes. Hopefully!
