My mother-in-law's Mimosa tree was in full bloom last weekend. My girly side got all "Squee!" over the sheer pinkness, and my wife loved the pink so much that she used one of the pictures as her new layout background.

She didn't, really, but she may or may not have said "The Calla Lillies are in bloom", and when mine are in bloom, it gets said alot around here (in a Katherine Hepburn voice). The cats love it.

Wait, wait. The cats love the voice? Or the flowers? :-)

I lied. The cats are indifferent to both. 8 ]

Growing up, our next door neighbor had a tree like that, and I never knew what it was called until now. That tree just lit up their front yard, and it was especially cool because no one else around had anything like it. They're so beautiful.

Sooooo pretty. Why did I think those trees only grew well in hot climates?

I didn't know what it was either. People around the house kept using the misnomer "pussy willow" which is weird, because apparently those have white blossoms instead of pink. A Google image search seems to confirm that this is indeed a "Mimosa". It really is spectacular. I've seen some others around, but they are too tall to take pictures of very well, so this particular tree is ideal -- many of the branches are conveniently low to the ground. I'm glad I could tell you what it is called, since you have always like it.

So you must have a lot of them down in TX?

Oh, wait! Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_Tree

There's an "especially in Texas" clause near the end.

Also, this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimosa which claims it really isn't a "Mimosa" at all.

Well, I guess it might not be a "Mimosa" after all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimosa but rather a "Silk Tree". Hmmmm.
