Both episodes seem to be based on two of the three Torchwood spin-off novels from last year, Border Princes in the case ot 2.05 "Adam" and Slow Decay in the case of 2.06 "Reset".

IMO "Adam" fails rather miserably at paying tribute to "Border Princes". This is a great pity as I thought that was the best of the three novels.

On the other hand, "Reset" is a much more enjoyable episode, and better-written than "Slow Decay". I admit I feel this way not just based on the writing but also on the presence of two very AWESOME guest stars. I won't say anymore here, but don't blame me if someone spoils you in the comments. :-)

Has anyone else read the spin-off novels? If so, discuss. If not -- discuss! (Perhaps I could be convinced that Adam is an interesting character in his own right, but it's hard for me to imagine this, with all the stuff from the novel stuck in my mind.)

I just caught up with Torchwood episodes and made a point of coming back to read the rest of your post because, yeah, I've read (or more accurately, listened to) the novels too. I liked both stories better in the books, but it's kind of not surprising considering that they get more time to play out in that format. I just thought the diet clinic thing was funny because it was so believable, but I get why they went the way they did with it, even if it did feel a little like a "New Earth" ripoff.

I'm glad to see someone else actually imbibed those novels! I was beginning to think I was alone. You're right, they had more time to play it out in that format, so I wasn't really being fair to the televised versions. And the diet clinic thing was very believable. It's funny how Rhys got more pulled into the thick of things in "Adam" whereas in the novels, it was the diet clinic. I'm glad they're using Rhys more.

I love Rhys. Had they not already included him a lot this series, I'd have been mad about him getting cut out of the episode based on the novel that had him in it.
