Movies: Saved!
Jun. 18th, 2004 10:01 pmGo see Saved!, the satire about Christian youth subculture, high school life, etc.
Saved! stars Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Heather Matarazzo, Eva Amurri, Martin Donovan, and Mary-Louise Parker among others.
The gay storyline, pregnant Christian storyline, and hypocritical Christian pastor storyline, these are all pretty funny and/or touching, and well done.
Also, there are lots of one-line jokes and double entendres of note.
I heard on NPR that the cast did a lot of research by going to Christian rock concerts and similar events and talking to the kids there and finding out how they talk, dress, interact so as to get the cultural vibe right. McCaulay Culkin said a lot of the kids just *assumed* he had 'converted' and been 'saved' and they were all 'right on!' and 'welcome!' and stuff.
1.) Vanity Fair, James Purefoy, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Jim Broadbent et al., fish out of water, poor girl tries to climb in social class romantically, costume drama, you've seen this plot before, a lot. But these actors are QUITE promising.
2.) The Last Shot, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, Tim Blake Nelson, Ray Liotta et al. "A movie director-screenwriter (Matthew Broderick) finds a man to finance his latest project but soon discovers that the producer is actually an undercover FBI agent working on a mob sting operation." This is based on an actual story that happened right here in our own Providence. I know, I'm posting about Providence and the Mob a lot, aren't I? Some funny shots in the preview of downtown Providence with Matthew Broderick saying "but this looks nothing like Arizona"!! Hahaha. In real life, Minnie Driver was cast in the fake movie and did not herself find out about the FBI/Mob thing until afterwards. In "The Last Shot" here, her role is played by Toni Collette.
3.) De-lovely, Kevin Kline, Ashley Judd, et al., with singing by a raft of current performers, including Natalie Cole. Kevin Kline plays Cole Porter, and the story seems from the previews a tad more straight and less gay than Cole Porter probably was. But the queer stuff does seem to be a bit of a plot lynchpin to serve as the downfall of the Kline/Judd romance.
4.) Anchorman, Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Fred Willard, Vince Vaughn, Tara Subkoff, Maya Rudolph, et al. It's Will Ferrell here, people. I don't need to explain, except to say that there was a flying kiss a la the Matrix that involved a desk being destroyed, that made me laugh SO much.
Usually, the previews all suck, but this time all of these four were interesting and/or made us laugh.
