What is the definition of "Flan"?

I'm talking fandom here -- it's a fairly recent word, as in "flanatics" and "Flanvention". What's a "flan" and how is it different from a regular "fan"?

I see -- someone should write that up in a FAQ or Glossary type-thing, with the etymology, before it just becomes urban legend. ;-)

So it only applies to the Firefly Flandom, and no other? Or has it already crept into wider usage?
