Can't say more for fear of SPOILING anyone who hasn't seen Serenity. If you have seen it, though, here's the Joss Whedon Melbourne Q & A to which I've been referring in comments in other people's LJs.
Yes!! A good boost. That actually came out in podcast form on Friday night. The New York Times also loved it. Pretty much all the critics loved it (with the exception of the Brain-dead USA Today and Variety, both of which had enough factual errors in their reviews to lend them a total lack of credibility).
Sadly, Flightplan (in its second week, and despite poor reviews) pulled in $15 million to beat Serenity which got $10.1 million. Sadly I think this is mostly attributable to star power -- having a big star like Jodie Foster is a sure draw for a movie (whereas Serenity has no big names). Still, Serenity killed Jessica Alba's "Into the Blue" (which only made about $7 million), coming out on top as the highest grossing new release.
Next week Wallace & Gromit will probably do some damage, but if the "drop off" from one weekend to the next isn't bad, Serenity could stay around for a while and still earn enough to warrant a sequel (the budget was pretty small so it shouldn't be hard).
