Today on one of our innumerable trips to the vet, we saw a squirrel -- yes, a SQUIRREL -- in a cage. The owner said that her cat is more frightened of the squirrel than the other way around. Apparently this squirrel will not become a "snack".

I did not know that people had squirrels as domesticated pets. Wow.

My mom has two squirrels that she feeds every day - they are "outside" squirrels but will come in the house to eat.

My mother also had an "outside" squirrel!

This was apparently a fully "inside" squirrel, however. They probably rescued it as a baby (lost its mommy or something?) and therefore it was more domesticatable?

My father-in-law had a pet raccoon.

Don't ever do that.

Wow, yes, those are big and can be a bit dangerous. I suppose that didn't necessarily go well!

It sounds as if it was kind of like having a pet chimpanzee. Or a pet tornado.

Um, I just don't see how anyone could want a pet squirrel. For one thing, could you ever housetrain them? Yuck. For another, there's the chewing problem. Wild squirrels, if they get into your attic, will do serious damage to your house. I can't imagine actually inviting one into your house on purpose.

It sounded as if she had one room in her house reserved for the squirrel, that was pretty squirrel-proof -- because she said that when it occasionally escaped from that room, the cat ran from it in fear.
