Justice Dept.'s Hiring Tactics Illegal, Report Says -- this is just appalling.

According to the report, Goodling would regularly ask job applicants:

"What is it about George W. Bush that makes you want to serve him?"

One experienced counterterrorism prosecutor did not get a job in Washington because his wife was a Democrat. As a result, the report says, a much less experienced but politically acceptable attorney was assigned to handle counterterrorism issues.

The inspector general also concluded that Goodling ousted Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie A. Hagen from her assignment in Washington and blocked her from other positions based on Goodling's belief that Hagen was a lesbian.

I'd like to serve him something, all right.

I keep thinking back to the way the Republicans tried to impeach Clinton over the Lewinsky mess, and then comparing that to this, and just boggling.

Ugh, I know. Yeah, Clinton was sleazy but that was OTT. It was like, "Well, if he lied to his wife, he could lie to the American people." Like, gimme a break. All politicians lie. But a lie about a blow job is different than lies about blowing people up.

I agree. Aren't Bush's lies about WMD in Iraq much worse? Really.

Hmmm. Aren't there three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial? I guess Bush would be their "ultimate boss," but isn't the Attorney General their real boss?

I don't think they should have been able to ask, "Why are you a Republican" because their party affiliation shouldn't have entered into the conversation. That's one of the questions applicants can't be asked, I thought. Isn't religion, marital status, age, and political affiliation off the table, or is that only for government jobs? I thought Federal employees and prospective Federal employees were the most protected from illegal hiring practices. Color me embarrassed.

Also, I didn't know Condoleeza was pro-choice. That's interesting.

Of course they shouldn't have been able to ask any of that. The other thing is, it was probably more widespread than that particular person, but she's the fall guy, er, fall gal, you know. People always like to claim things like this are isolated, that the organization as a whole is sound, that there's a rotten apple in every barrel, etc. etc., when usually this kind of behavior is just the tip of the iceberg of a thoroughly rotten organization.

That's just disturbing.

I wonder just how much farther the practices would continue if a democrat (or other party) president was in office. Would they continue?

*sigh*

They might or might not, but I think the Republicans tend to be a bit more brazen about this kind of thing.

What just kills me is that Goodling got immunity in return for her testimony, so apparently she can't be prosecuted unless it can be proved that she lied under oath. Grrr...

Wow, yes, that's really annoying. They can never get anyone to squeal without the promise of immunity.
