A ray of sunshine after the defeat by Germany. In the over-used word of the commentators, "bittersweet" for the veteran older players who will probably not be returning for the next World Cup.

Feel free to use any of my World Cup LJ icons. They are fairly random and just from the last two U.S. matches. Cuz, I am lazy.

Speaking of bittersweet, I watched Bend It Like Beckham the other night, and it was sad to watch the characters get excited by the fact that they could come to America and play professionally. It was sad to think that it's over.

Yes, this seems to tinge everything in the tournament, because after all, German players and other players from abroad have indeed been playing in the WUSA league.

One of the American players was quoted after the Canada game saying she was touched by the fans' support, especially when she saw that many of them had signs that said "Save the WUSA".

And it isn't really ticket sales that are at fault -- it is not that there is any lack of fans. It's that corporate America refuses to sponsor the league. The league's business plan has called for eight corporate sponsors, but that has dropped off to only two. Corporations are willing to sponsor many sports leagues through advertising, corporate giving, etc., but apparently not women's soccer. The WNBA does better, for some reason.
