Father's Day

On Father's day (Sunday), I accidentally set some popcorn in the microwave on fire.

I set the timer to what I thought was 3 minutes 45 seconds (but I now realize I must have added an extra digit by accident, so that the timer was set for over 34 minutes).

I went downstairs to stain treat some laundry and fold some dry laundry. Anyway, I came back upstairs about ten minutes later, took a (stupid) deep breath in my shock, and sucked in a few enormous lungfulls of very smoky air.

Saturday, the 9V battery in the smoke detector died, and I had not yet bought a new one. So, no smoke alarm.

The second stupid thing I did was open the microwave door, letting even more smoke out into the house.

The third stupid thing I did was fail to close the two kitchen doors (because if I had, the rest of the apartment would have stayed mostly smoke-free.

My resourceful, calm, cool-in-a-crisis girlfriend opened windows twice as quickly as I did. She drowned the popcorn bag (black) with water, closed off the kitchen (better late than never), and set up two fans in the kitchen windows to suck the smoky air out.

Then we put the cats on their leashes and took them out to the porch so their little lungs could breathe! I got my first mosquito bites of the year, and the cats had a complete blast.

Anyway, due to all this insanity, I completely forgot to call my father.

So I called him yesterday with lots of apologies. He didn't seem upset, but I felt bad anyway.

He's not well, has to have another operation, and is pretty lonely. It's weird that I was closer to my mom, growing up, but now my father is so much nicer to me, so much easier to talk to, and is actually civil to my girlfriend. I really wish I could afford to fly back and see him, because I really fear he may not have that much time left.

microwaves are totally a communist ploy to distract us. My friend who, at the time was an incredibly dorky 14 year old boy, once microwaved a poptart while still inside its aluminum wrapper. Boy did the sparks fly! Once I caught him trying to stick a fork in the toaster.

I was late with my Father's Day present too, but Dad's understand. I hope you can make the most of time spent with him.

Oh yes, I also learned about those! Now I use a chopstick. Nice and wooden and doesn't conduct electricity.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, but the popcorn story was rather amusing!

It's funny *now* !! Ha. Ha. Things are always funny afterwards ... unless someone loses an eye; then it's just Xander's horrible luck.

Okay so now I *can't* breathe! No more funnies!

I don't believe in microwaves.

I hope your dad gets better.

Thanks. I hope he does, too.

Yes, microwaves can be evil. Often the convenience just does not outweigh the negative aspects.
