Voting hell
Nov. 2nd, 2004 12:54 pmSo yes, we VOTED. No idea when or if our votes will be counted. By HAND. The voting machine was jammed, so our ballots couldn't be scanned, and had to be dumped down into the lower-level slot of the machine.
Did I mention the chaos? The way that there were three lines for getting a ballot, but only two people with voting rolls? And that the lines (A-H H-R R-Z) were not really lines, but more, clumps, and that the people at the head of the lines all had the wrong part of the alphabets? And that they didn't even ask to see our IDs? And that we then had to get in another line to actually be HANDED a ballot? And that all four of these lines were arranged in such a way as to cover the voting booths/? So that the fifth line, the line for voting, was filled with people who thus could not see that half the voting booths were empty?
It was total chaos.
Plus, this was in a Fire Station, so the loud speaker kept going off to announce things to the firemen (who were nowhere in sight). Plus there was no parking, and we parked in a private lot that had 'you will be towed' signs. We didn't get towed, but come on! Voting places should have parking!
Plus, the poll workers, who were too few in number, didn't seem very smart or able to deal with the crises, and their calls for a new voting machine were apparently falling on deaf ears.
This all just sucks.
Rhode Island usually has very organized, good polling, but not this year.
We were in line for at least 45 minutes. FECK.
