chicken: (78. Eccleston as Doctor Who)

Sadly, this episode was fairly predictable and fairly heavy-handed. I was a bit disappointed.

I'd have expected better from Jane Espenson, because I am usually a big fan of her writing. After seeing the episode I told myself, "oh, all the parts I didn't like must have been down to the other writer" since she co-wrote it. But then in her blog entry today she described writing exactly one of the scenes I didn't like. Darn.

I really enjoyed the food shortage episode she wrote earlier in the season. But you know what might be really interesting, is to see her pen a very, very Cylon-centric episode. That could be really great.

Wow, the backstory is very interesting. I don't know if I agree that using B&W is the best way to signal "flashback" but the story is so good it doesn't really matter. Eccleston and Takei and rooftops, oh my. And little Hiro! This is my favorite show on TV right now.

My Bunny says it looks like Eric Roberts has had some plastic surgery, and I have to agree. It doesn't suit him -- he actually kind of looks like a Romulan, especially with that hair he had in the flashbacks.

Eric Roberts used to be handsome. Now he looks just scary. Why can't people stay away from the plastic surgeons.

Where are the Cylons? Really. It's like they never existed!

I know, a couple episodes in a row of pretty much no Cylons -- weird!

Of course, my boss at work has this theory that everyone on this show is ultimately a Cylon. That is, the humans are all a much, much more advanced model of Cylon, so advanced that they seem completely human and are mortal, etc., and have no racial memory of ever being anything but 'human'. Only none of the characters knows this yet. He thinks that peace will only come when people (both human & Cylon) begin to realize this and begin to realize that what defines a human and what defines a Cylon is tough to say. His theory is supported by the very existence of clues like Sharon's and Helo's baby, the Cylons' internal fighting among themselves and striving for faith and meaning and understanding of 'god', etc.

I don't really buy this theory, yet I find it very interesting. I am particularly troubled overall (both in the realm of his theory and outside of it) by the very presence of that baby. I just don't get how it was possible for it to be conceived.

Didn't Lebo(sp) tell Kara that Adama was a Cylon?

I think that would be a great way to end the series (in 15 years or so) to find out that they're all Cylons.

I can't figure out the baby either. Also, I can't figure out how Boomer/Sharon was able to come back exactly as the self who loves Helo that last time she downloaded.

Oh well. I do love the show, but we need some Cylon action.

Also, I knew that awful thing was going to happen this episode and I left the room because I didn't want to see it. I thought I'd been gone long enough to miss it, and I walked back in right when we all got to see that awful thing.

Yes, I think Leoben did say that, although since everything he says to Kara is a mind-game, you never can tell. Truth in lies, though. Hmmm. I would find it quite awesome if Adama turned out to be a Cylon. Wouldn't that just upset everyone's applecart?

And it would be a great way to end the series. I mean, the humans were playing god when they invented Cylons, and now Cylons are making new Cylons, and all of them, human and Cylon alike, have cruel genocidal streaks, so in the end they all start to look too much alike, morally. So if they really all turned out to be the same, that would be very interesting.

Also, I can't figure out how Boomer/Sharon was able to come back exactly as the self who loves Helo that last time she downloaded.

I think this is the same as the way Lucy Lawless' character had some stronger personalities in some rebirths than others. It's all "mystical" and stuff -- but it does lend credence to my boss' theory. Because if Cylons can retain that indefinable "personality" across rebirths (how Buddhist!), something that is traditionally seen as a very human trait, then it starts to look like maybe the humans and Cylons really aren't so different from one another.

Also, I knew that awful thing was going to happen this episode and I left the room because I didn't want to see it. I thought I'd been gone long enough to miss it, and I walked back in right when we all got to see that awful thing.

Which awful thing? There were several awful things, all of them very predictable, that happened in this episode. Are you talking about the thing that happened in the Tylium production line?

Yes. Remember the boy who kept saying he wasn't a farmer? Oh my, what happened to him was so horrible, but I knew as soon as he arrived complaining about being selected that something very very bad was going to happen to him. :shudders:

See, that scene pissed me off more than any other scene. It displayed a bit of contempt for the viewer. Like yes, here's this boy that we're obviously going to use to exploit yours and the Chief's feelings about the hard working conditions, so obviously we are going to hurt him. Oh, look we've hurt him, what a huge enormous surprise! Not. I mean, he was a red shirt the moment he came on screen. I expect less obvious stuff from the BSG crew.

I left the room every time I saw him on the screen because I didn't want to see what I knew they were going to do to him. It was obvious that something *horrible* was going to happen to a character we really had no investment in. It was cheap. You're right about that.

At least they didn't kill him. If they had done that I would have lost all respect for BSG.
