Mr Canadia Man appears to be that very rare thing - a rational politician.

Of course, when I rule the world, legal/civil marriage will be banned (religious marriage left up to, appropriately, religions) and replaced with Codependence, a set of papers offering pretty much the same rights as marriage, but open to straight couple, gay couples, best friends who want to live together, whatever. S'long as you can prove you're codependent (financially, physically, emotionally, or some mix of the three, my plans are not yet finalised...). And if you are all coupley, then you can have a religious ceremony, or a "marriage ceremony" or whatever, just the papers will be different and open to more people, and will still include the option of adopting your spouse's name or whatever. Erm. Yes. It's entirely possible tha I've been thinking about this way too much.

Gosh, I am so jealous.

We in the U.S. can never be more than (in Sarah Vowell's words) partly cloudy" patriots. Plus I'm just too cynical about the political process and about human nature to ever be an unthinking, mindless flag-waver.

You may have slightly more luxury in that direction, in Canada, because your politicians seem more fair-minded.

same sex civil unions become legal over here (uk) on december 5th 2005. Tony Blair actually did something right for once. Maybe we can persuade him to bite Bush's ankles til he agrees to it too? nope, probably not...
