The L-Word 2.9: Late, Later, Latent
Apr. 18th, 2005 01:46 amI've discovered another thing I don't like about Jenny. When she says the word "fucking" as an adjective, as in, "you are so fucking pretentious" or whatever, she just sounds so earnest, like a 50-year-old I once knew who was trying to sound "hip" around the young 'uns by inserting the word "fuck" awkwardly into conversation. It's like, "hi, by the way I use expletives, you can tell I am such a damn liberated person, when really, I'm still this weird fucked up idiot."
In more happy news, Bette + Tina = hottt, finally, again. And it's as if they are no longer trying to make Helen three-dimensional at all. Any attempt has been abandoned in favor of making her unequivocally a control freak. Not that I'm complaining, because it gets Bette and Tina back together, but it isn't the most super writing in the whole world.
Mark's storyline is still disturbing how they're trying to make him relatively sympathetic compared to the other stupid straight guys. What's their ultimate purpose here?
Broody Shane is losing a bit of her veneer, but she's still interesting. And the Jenny/Carmen peeing thing made me go, "ew" -- not sure why.
I did love Dana's awkwardness around sex toys -- it was very cute. No Dana, it's not a bisexual thing, it's a lesbians pleasing themselves and each other any damn way they want to. And yeah, you should have practised putting that thing on a few times before the big moment, so you would seem smooth and together. :-) Adorable and funny. And of course Alice is still the funniest, all, "oh, I'm allergic to that one".

Date: 2005-04-18 06:14 am (UTC)Dana and Alice are so cute. Def. my favorite couple on the show.
Helen on the other hand, makes me want to stick hot pokers in my eyes. She had potential to be interesting, but they pretty much killed that.

Date: 2005-04-18 05:17 pm (UTC)I've found the Angel/Buffy communities and boards I belong to were quite diligent about marking spoilers for the first week or two. It's a very different culture of fandom than, say, the L Word. Maybe the etiquette was just more well-established after 5-7 years.

Date: 2005-04-18 05:38 pm (UTC)When you're up-to-date on the episodes, you sometimes forget what you know vs. what others know. I had this problem with people on my BtVS/AtS boards who read future spoilers. They would write a "non-spoilery" post about current stuff I was familiar with, but you could read between the lines and figure out what was going to happen, because their knowledge of future episodes leaked into their interpretation and conclusions about current stuff.
I'm having this same problem myself with two local friends I'm catching up on the L Word. I know everything up to 2.8, and with one friend, we're back in Season 1, and with the other friend, we're only up to 2.3. Sometimes I just *know* I'd be giving something away if I said something that popped into my head to add to the conversation. Other times, I completely forget that something I want to comment on *hasn't happened yet* from my friend's point of view.
Point is, it can be carelessness, and sometimes, it's just a brain glitch.

Date: 2005-04-18 06:22 pm (UTC)I find that the people on Whedonesque have gotten much better about Spoiler labels over the last 18 months. When I first joined during the end of S6 Buffy, there were a lot of problems with people not Spoiler-tagging things when they should have, and the international members (who in Britain and Australia would be as much as one or two seasons behind, sometimes) really pushed to reform people's habits.

Date: 2005-04-20 05:38 am (UTC)Yeah, I don't get the freak-out either. I've had lovers bring up the idea of using them and get all worried I'll be insulted. I'm like "What?" It's all good.
I like Bette and Tina being around each other and even making love but without getting back together. They're still not ready for that. At least, Bette isn't. She's still rather clueless. Helena, I think, is supposed to be Bette, Only Then Some--like Tina moved on from one control freak to an even bigger control freak, and by learning how to stand up to Helena from Hell, she'll learn how to deal with Bette.
BTW, my L Word 2. 9 thoughts are here.
